Welcome to Barahan! -“where
unity, peace, environment and education are the top
priorities”.
Barahan is one of the eleven barangays (Alakaak, Barahan,
Casague, Dayap, Lumangbayan, Mulawin, Pinagturilan, Poblacion 1, Poblacion
2, San Vicente, and Kurtinganan) in the town of Sta. Cruz Occidental
Mindoro. It is located 8.5 kilometers south of Sta. Cruz and about 250
kilometers south of Manila. The community sets in a long stretch of sandy
and flat terrain land with an approximate dimension of 1700 meters by 600
meters. Bounded by Bato River-Dayap on the northeast and Barahan Bay-South
China Sea on the southwest. It is blessed by nature with kilometers of
sandy beaches sloping gradually to bluish and clear water which make it
ideal for swimming, boating and other water fun adventures.
The vast land areas of Barahan from
Biating, Gitong, Batong Munti, Sagisian, Palanipan, Borobor, Amnay, and
Panlaan, are flat terrain farm lands suitable for rice or corn farming and
other tropical crops and vegetables. While along the shoreline of the
famous Bato River from “Punduhang Kastila” to Mambog-Wawa are clayish
swamps that are abundant in nipa palms (sasahan), clam shells, snails and
other salt water foods. There are few privately owned fish and crab ponds
also along these areas.
With more diversified industry (nipa, agriculture farming
and fishing) and improved methods of farming, Barahan’s economic growth in
the last decades was enormous. Now, some roads are concrete paved and
electricity is available in most places. The two schools, the Barahan
Elementary School and Barahan National High School play a major role in
the success of many Barahenyos and have produced long list of
professionals.
Historically, derived from the Tagalog word “bara” means dock,
Barahan is one of the best places to secure and dock boats or any water
vessels in anytime of the year and especially when the water of the seas
are rough due to strong southwest monsoon (habagat) and typhoon. The Bato
River parallel to Barahan and stretching about six kilometers long and
has a direct link to South China Sea is considered as a safe natural
harbor. The Spaniards have left distinct footprints and historical places
in Barahan, the “Punduhang Kastila” served as the port of the Spaniards in
18th century and “Pinagpihitang Barko” to maneuver their ship or galleon.
Nowadays,
living in Barahan is really worthwhile. The gifts of the sea, river,
farmland, hardworking citizens and professionals will make this place
continue to excel and progress. Mabuhay!
